Fine, before I explain you on how to optimize your blog for Google featured snippet, let me first explain on what it is.
What is featured snippet?
When users type a question in Google search, then a special box highlighted at the top of search results with a short answer to the users query will appear. This is what a featured snippet is.

This is generally called as position 0 in Google search results.
Featured snippet provides quick answer for a user query without the need to dig to multiple pages.
Here are some of the ways through which you can optimize your blog for a getting shown in featured snippet:
- Target keywords which are in the form of questions. For example, if you are writing a blog on making money online, then you can use questions like “how to make money online?”, “what are the ways to make money online?” in the content of your blog. You can use these headings as H2 or H3 in your blog content and then try to answer it in a short paragraph or in various points.
Having said that below are various formats of featured snippets generally Google show in search results:
- Paragraph
- List
- Table
- Content which is around 40 to 50 words written in a single paragraph has chances of getting shown under the paragraph featured snippet.
- Create blogs which explains content in the form of various lists, so that it can get shown under list featured snippet.
Tip: Add more than 8 to 10 items in your list, so that Google will show a link which makes users to click on it and make them land on your website.
For example, if your blog is about website design them you can create blogs around topics like “15 tips for an effective website design”, “16 tips for newbie web designer” etc.
- As per one of the study conducted by SEMrush, the top performers who are been shown in featured snippets are using more images in their content. So try to add more images which are visually good, in your blog.
- Google favors websites which has HTTPS for getting them shown under position 0. So make sure your blog is having an SSL certificate.
- Try to implement schema markup for the all the pages of your website. For WordPress users, their job becomes very easy to implement schema markup just by installing a plugin. Other users have to implement it using JSON-LD.
- Increase the domain authority of your website by getting more backlinks from trusted domains of your niche.
- Keep your blog updated on regular basis with loads of useful information.
- Use header tags (H1 to H6 tags) properly in your blog post so that search engines will have more clarity on the structure of each post, which makes them easy for getting your blog shown in featured snippet.
- Make a list of all the keywords for which your blog is ranking on the first page of Google but is not been shown under featured snippet. Target the content of these pages and optimize them for getting shown in featured snippet. These can your low hanging fruits.
- Get the keywords for which your competitors content is shown under featured snippet. Analyse on why are they been shown and why is your content not shown, try to do the necessary modifications or fill out the gaps and expect for the best.
