Blogging vs YouTube: Many of my students keep asking me, which is the best way to make money online.
As the coin has 2 sides, you can make money both from blogging and YouTube.
But just to keep the answer simple, if you are good at writing or passionate at writing then blogging might be the best option for you.
At the same time, if you are not good at writing and are willing to create videos based on the knowledge you have then YouTube is the best option.
If you feel that you are good at both writing and creating videos then I would recommend you to do both.
Now let me go in deep and explain how you can earn money from YouTube and then from Blogging.
Blogging VS YouTube – What is YouTube?
YouTube is a video sharing platform which has millions of visitors on a daily basis. Anyone having a Gmail account can upload video into YouTube, through a channel.
The video uploaded can be viewed by anyone from any part of the world, if you have an internet connection.
Now:
How can you actually earn money from YouTube?
There are various ways you can earn money from YouTube, some of the most popular ways are:
- Using Adsense
- Affiliate Marketing
- Sponsorship
Let me give you an example, let’s say you are watching a short film on YouTube, you can sometimes observe that the director of that short film tells that this episode is sponsored by so and so brand. By doing this the director gets paid from that particular brand. This will be part of Sponsorship which I mentioned above.
Sometimes when you are watching a YouTube video, as ad will suddenly appear. If by chance you click on the link of ad, then the person who uploaded that particular YouTube video gets paid. This is part of Adsense.
Now there are few tutorials or product review videos, where people review about a particular product and tell at the end of the video that they have given the link to buy product in the description below to video. If anyone click on those links and purchase that particular product, the person who reviewed the product will be paid commission. This is part of Affiliate Marketing.
I hope all the examples mentioned above gave you some insights on how you can make money from YouTube.
Now let’s come to Blogging.
Blogging VS YouTube – What is Blogging?
Blogging is a way of expressing your opinions or views about any topic of your interest, in written form.
Most people think that starting a blog is very difficult and needs lots of money.
But in fact, starting a blog is very easy and there are many helpful guides you can get online for this. My own blog has such detailed blog and here is the link: How to start a blog – step by step guide for beginners.
Now the next question comes on:
How to earn money from blogging?
All the ways which you use to make money from YouTube can also be used here as well:
- Adsense
- Affiliate Marketing
- Sponsorship
But, other than the above mentioned ways, there are some additional ways blogging can help you with, for making money:
- Selling you own products like : ebooks, video courses etc.
- Direct Ads placement
- Using various ad networks other than Adsense
- Many other options
Here are some of the:
Similarities between blogging and YouTube, for making money:
- Both requires you to learn on continuous basis
- Both require original content and content copied from others will not be much useful, as it lacks uniqueness.
- Both requires hard work
- Both requires time to produce results
Now, since you have seen some similarities, lets see some differences as well:
Differences between blogging and YouTube
- For blogging, you need to buy a domain and hosting. Where as for YouTube, it is not required.
- Blogging helps you to upload content of any type – textual, image, videos etc. But with YouTube, you can only upload videos.
Conclusion
To conclude, I would say that both blogging and YouTube are the best options to make money. Each of it has their own advantages and disadvantages. But if possible, I would recommend going with both the platforms.

Solid breakdown here Sai. YouTube rocks but nothing beats blogging for branding and monetizing.
